Persepolis Chapter: Eggy On the first of September, cousin Alexis passed away

On the first of September, cousin Alexis died. My folks were noting telephones and answering to messages. Nearly everybody on the far edge of the line was crying. At the point when they were done, I asked them who Alexis was and what had occurred. They disclosed to me that Kuya Alexis was my more established cousin who might visit the house to see my folks at whatever point he had the opportunity. They disclosed to me he would play and converse with me for quite a long time, thus did his sweetheart Ate Nika. At that point they revealed to me that at 10:00 pm the previous evening them two were shot by three looters in their home in Quezon City. It was said that their house keeper let the burglars in and left with them after they’d taken gems and their workstations. My mother began crying, and my father left the room. I pondered about how the burglars knew the house cleaner. My mother and father purchased garments for Alexis and Nika to wear at their memorial service. My mother demonstrated me Alexis’ tie; â€Å"This is the main tie I at any point gave your father.† It was the ugliest tie I’ve ever observed, however I surmise that appeared well and good for him to wear it. My sister Pimee called saying that she was going to return home for the wake, I was so energized I tidied up my room that we shared for her appearance. She didn’t wind up remaining with me. Upon the arrival of the service, the sky was clear and the sun was sparkling. We were totally approached to sport white, which was peculiar on the grounds that I’m pretty dark was the shading to wear for these sorts of things. The mass was a haze. The two final resting places were close to the special raised area, yet I couldn’t see the bodies; there were such a large number of blossoms around them. During the tribute, a few people who knew Alexis went up to talk. Some of them giggled, some of them cried. It was hard on occasion to comprehend their stammering. The greater part of them called Alexis Eggy, as far as anyone knows since his head was formed like an egg. The wake was surprising. People’s faces were moist, their eyes red and watery, but then they were all the while eating tidbits and clutching drinks, as though it was a gathering. Individuals were blending, welcoming each other with a tragic grin and sharing each other’s association with Kuya Alexis. I saw Nika’s father and sibling chatting with Kuya Alexis’ kin and mother. I couldn’t clarify the looks on their faces; maybe the world finished. â€Å"Isabel!† My mother called. I strolled to her, and she grasped my hand â€Å"Would you like to bid farewell to Alexis?† Her voice shook. I gestured, and we both advanced toward the final resting place. I looked into the wooden case, and there he was, resting calmly. I understood that Eggy was a fitting moniker, since his head truly was egg-molded. Around his neck was my dad’s tie in all it’s frightful wonder, not he would have disapproved. His skin was two or three shades darker, and his body looked firm, however I could in any case feel warmth transmitting from him. I remained there for a couple of moments, simply seeing his face. He appeared as though he was going to wake up, so I paused. I got fretful, and before I knew it, my face was clammy like the others as well. My mother heard me and raced to comfort me. I disclosed to her I have to address Ate Bettina, Kuya Alexis’ more established sister. My mother took me to Bettina and disclosed to her that I had a comment. At the point when we discovered her, I tapped her shoulder and revealed to her this: â€Å"Once, when I returned home from artful dance at around 10 p.m. Kuya Alexis and Ate Nika where conversing with Dad and Mom after supper. I sat adjacent to Kuya Alexis. He asked me how artful dance was and I revealed to him that I needed to stop. I revealed to him that my cohorts continue disclosing to me I ought to find something useful to do in light of the fact that I can never go along with them on ends of the week. I can never go to gatherings or spend time with them. It’s simply school and expressive dance, school and artful dance. At that point Kuya Alexis asked me, ‘Do you love ballet?’ And I said yes. At that point he said to me, ‘Then continue doing it regardless of what anybody lets you know. I simply needed to reveal to you that I’m still in artful dance in light of him.† She began crying, yet she grinned at me and said â€Å"Thank you.† I understood that my white shirt was doused. At the point when we exited the congregation, I turned upward and saw that the sky was dark. A couple of moments later, it began coming down.

Homelessness Today essays

Vagrancy Today papers One day as I was heading to my sisters house in Ravenswood, I saw an older man remaining toward the finish of the exit ramp. The noble man was holding a sign that read: Homeless will work for food. God Bless. As I moved to a stop, I moved down my window and offered him my last five dollars. Shockingly the honorable man declined my foundation. He said god favor you miss yet I will work for my keep. I revealed to him that I could positively welcome that. I at that point asked on the off chance that he had a spot to remain for the night and he educated me that on the off chance that he didnt get to Parkersburg he would go to a companions house. As Mr. Baumohl pronounces in his book Homelessness in America The lives surprisingly, crippled or not, are inserted in conditions molded as much by basic factors as close to home and true to life ones ( 26). It is pitiful to state that with that announcement the refined man I experienced isn't qualified for destitute help as per the West Virginia Bureau for ladies and childrens destitute administrations. So as to be qualified for administrations under the destitute program, an individual or family should be in quick need of lodging and have no pay or methods for getting lodging. This implies there is nobody, companion or family, who can give crisis safe house and there are no money related assets accessible to the individual or family with which to buy cover. People or families confronting ousting are not yet destitute and hence don't meet all requirements for destitute administrations (West Virginia Bureau for Children and Families). Today, in America, an ever increasing number of individuals are getting destitute in each feeling of the word and still incapable to get help from government offices. We as a concerned and caring country need to battle these vile marks and help the individuals who need it, not simply the individuals who qualify. Destitute, its significance is exacting and mundane: the nonattendance of a residence. Along these lines, we utilize it to portray those sl... <!

Understanding Religion, Totemism, Culture and Women - 1375 Words

Understanding Religion, Totemism, Culture and Women (Essay Sample) Content: Name:Instructor:Subject:Date:ReligionSigmund Freud is has dealt with the nature of religion and origins of religion. He has several publications both books and essays. His main regard concerning religion is that God is only but an illusion. Freud believed that religion is mainly based on the graving need for the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"father figureà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ hence God has been considered the à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"fatherà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ in most religions. Freud was originally a Jew and first encountered anti-Semitism in 1873 and he was expected to feel inferior himself because he was a Jew. He was completely estranged from his religion but did not have desire to alter that.Freud suggests that religion can be compared to neurosis in that they are similar end products of human mind. He refers to neurosis as "an individual religiosity" while religion as repetitive rituals therefore defines religion as a "universal obsessional neurosisà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . In Totem and Taboo, which Freud publishe d in the year 1913, he analyzes what he refers to as tendency of the primitive tribes that promulgate regulations against incest within the groups named for the totem animals and objects, and also create certain taboos in regard to people, actions and things. He notes that the ancient taboos today still play very significant role in the society while totem has been long abandoned and actually replaced by newer and newer forms. One of the core ideas of taboo and totem, Freud elaborates; "This view of religion throws a particularly clear light upon the psychological basis of Christianity, in which, it may be added, the ceremony of the totem-feast still survives with but little distortion in the form of Communion." Freud goes ahead to refer to religion as a certain illusion which may be one of the most important items in the invention of civilization, (Sigmund Freud, 1927). He argues that religion defends against superior crushing force of nature and therefore religion was to correct sh ortcomings as a result of civilization. Freud describes a manà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s need for religion as "a sensation of à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"eternityà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬, a feeling like of something unbounded and limitless. He suggests that this feeling is à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"oceanicà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ and a wish fulfillment which he relates to a kidà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s need for parental protection.Several responses and criticisms emerged against Freudà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s work. Kristal, 1949 said Freud had correctly exposed irrationality existing in religion but he (Freud) did not substitute anything beyond "a mythology of rational despairà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . Alfred Aldar believed God was helpful to human therefore he did not agree with Freud.According to Clifford Geertz (1965), religion is a powerful system of symbols which can establish very long lasting motivations and moods in human beings by actually formulating certain conceptions of an order of existence. These symbols help in interpretation of the reality and also shaping of behav ior. The symbols are considered sacred and can synthesize peopleà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s character, tone and their quality of life. Symbols in themselves have message on how human beings ought to live.Symbols are intended to persuade human that there is a correlation between how we actually live and the nature of the reality. In all areas of human beings lives, there is always something that can cause pain, in such scenarios, the symbols wonà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬t take away the actual pain but rather makes it possible for human beings to be able to endure the pain with assurance that there exist answers for this. Christian cross in this case is the perfect example; Christians are assured that every suffering has an ultimate positive meaning at the end of it all. The cross does not explicitly explain the reason for the current suffering but claims the divine purpose of the same.Religion according to Geertz makes motivation and moods more realistic. The importance of a ritual is actually sending human being s back to life situations and circumstances with a mind that the broader view of life is good, true and perhaps fulfilling. These symbols and rituals enhance manà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s commitment to nomos, which is how the society teaches about life and its experiences. In comparison of the views of Freud and Geertz, the understanding presented by Geertz is more useful.Another historian named Jonathan Smith did research about religions. His researches included Hellenistic religions, Maori cults and theory of ritual. Smith was a graduate from Haverford College with B.A in philosophy in the year 1960. According to Smith, religion must be historical, anthropological, an exercise of imagination as well as conventional. He argues that religion is a product of geographically and historically situated manà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s ingenuity, curiosity and cognition à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬ simply explained, as thee end result of the human labor, the ordinary ways in which human beings create the world which they live in.Accor ding to Durkheim, Totemism refers to a system of belief where every human is believed to have spiritual connection with an existing human being for example a plant or animal referred to as a à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‹Å"totemà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬. The totem in most cases is believed to interact with a specified group to serve as a symbol. In Jonathan Smithà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s "The Bare Facts of Ritualà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ , he tries to connect two symbols, events, texts or thought directly to one another hence raising a possibility of some secret interconnection of the scholarà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬s faith article. In attempt to illustrate building blocks of ritual, Smith illustrates using an illustration and I quote "Leopards break into the temple and drink the sacrificial chalices dry: this occurs repeatedly, again and again: finally it can be reckoned on beforehand and becomes part of the ceremonyà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . In this excerpt, it is clear that the ritual will have advantage over the accident that occurred. Smith also uses the e xcerpt "At Athens, Lysimache. The priestess of Athene Polias, when asked for a drink by the mule drivers who had transported the sacred vessels, replied, "No, for I fear it will get into the ritual.à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ Ãƒ ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ Upon entering the temple, one is required to use marked-off space, a ritual not an accident. If such an accident occurred in the temple, it would be treated as a miracle or interpreted as blasphemy. Smith explains that a place where gods and men are held to be very transparent to one another was called sacred. Here, all communications whether noise or static decreased to increase exchange of information. In the first excerpt leopards were considered as a sign and therefore incorporated in the ritual communication while from the second excerpt, if the notion of the temple is taken seriously as a sacred place, then the ordinary will become significant and therefore sacred.Feminism can be used to refer to a collection of ideologies and movements with the aim of establishing, defining and defending equal political, social and economic rights for the women while phenomenology can be defined as the study of the structures of consciousness or experience. Research reveals that the quality of suffering experienced by women is very different from that experienced by men. Women are also believed to suffer more than men according to female lawyers. The explanation for this is that men find pleasurable the very objective condition or event that is painful to women. The most cited example is the phrase "sexual harassmentà ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ . For the man it is very pleasurable while for the woman, it is very embarrassing, disgusting and at the same time very painful. Similarly, for a man some experience can be offensive yet at best stimulating while a woman finds the same experience dehumanizing and even to some extent life threatening. It is believed that men are obliv...

The Wild Are Mccandless s Actions Justified - 807 Words

Into The Wild: Are McCandless s Actions Justified? Freedom and Nature. These are both things Chris McCandless longed to dwell in. He took his steps into becoming everying thing he had hoped. But were his dreams and aspirations worth the ‘’Betrayal† of everyone who had ever cared about him? Do we owe our families anything in the first place? By looking at McCandless’s actions and reasonings we can see that he is justified solely on his passion and courage. People would like to say that he was irresponsible, ignorant and careless in his actions. However, all he wanted was complete freedom. He didn’t have to be sorry for anyone just because he was letting his heart guide the way. Starting off with the idea and question of ‘’Do we owe our families anything?’’ In some cases yes. When you grow up with the same or at least similar mind set as your parents, it is not difficult to stick around and respect them after they raise you. However ,in McCandless’s case, we see that he is nothing similar to his parents. They are materialistic which is a direct offence to what McCandless believes. His mother Billie McCandless say, â€Å"Chris was very much of the school that you should own nothing except what you could carry on your back at a dead run.† This clearly illustrates what his opinions were on materialism. Money was also a big factor in his family. His parents cared deeply about projecting themselves as being wealthy. Analysis of My Personal Identity - 1331 Words

Situating Self Assignment When analyzing aspects of our identity that shape our attitude, behaviors, and experiences, we must include concepts of sex, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender, age, socioeconomic class, religion, and ability. It is essential that we understand our own and others identities in order to better understand our social relationships and our interactions with one another. Specifically, I am talking about a theory of intersectionality. Intersectionality helps us understand the discrete forms and expressions of oppression and the ways that gendered subjects are created, and shaped by, one another. These numerous systems of oppression and discrimination propose how various biological, social and cultural categories such as race, class, gender, (dis) ability, and sexual orientation coexist on multiple, and often simultaneous levels, contributing to systematic social inequality. In situating myself, I am an East Indian woman born into a first generation immigrant family. My ethnic background is Punjabi; specifically, I am a Sikh. I am less privileged because I am a woman and I am raced. I am more privileged because I live in an economically developed part of the world, I have almost completed a post-secondary education, I am able, and I was born into an upper middle class family. As an East Indian woman from an upper middle class family, I am able to speak in fluent English that allows access to certain opportunities that others do not have.Show MoreRelatedA Qualitative Case Study : An Interpretive Research Paradigm1583 Words   |  7 Pagesreconstructed through the process of human and social interaction (Mackenzie Knipe, 2006). Letter From a Birmingham Jail Essay Example For Students

Letter From a Birmingham Jail Essay Outline1 Introduction1.1 Thesis2 Ethos3 Pathos4 Logos5 Conclusion Introduction It was back in the summer of 1963 when racism against African Americans racist terror was fiercest and at its peak in Birmingham, then dubbed as Bombingham by some locals. As the face of civil activism, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr was arrested while on the forefront of peaceful anti-segregation march. This letter was part of the stand which was branded as the Civil Rights Movement. Among the actions taken by the Civil Rights Movement included marches, bus boycotts, sit-ins and other kinds of demonstrations, all conducted in a non-violent form. Among his many famous pieces, The Birmingham letter was to be one of Martin Luther Kings powerful piece. While confined in jail, it is when he produced the extraordinary document. The Jim Crows administration never saw it coming. Martin Luther prudently makes use of ethos, pathos, and logos in combination with a direct argumentative plan when reinforcing his claims. Thesis The letter from Birmingham jail was written in response to the clergymen’s accusations on King and his people saying their action was â€Å"unjust and ill-informed†. It is in this letter where he strongly shows the critics why he is right while they are wrong. Ethos King precisely strengthens his views by using ethos in his â€Å"mission critical letter†. In the first paragraph, he refers to his oppressors as men of goodwill which articulates his respect for the administration. Additionally, he refers to them as,† My Dear Fellow Clergymen†. By so doing, he already equates himself with his critics. King proceeds to establish his credibility by mentioning, â€Å"I have the honor of serving as president of Southern Christian Leadership Conference†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ (King, 2018). He also brings to their knowledge about his invitation to Birmingham via the conferences partner. By providing the Southern Christian Leadership Conference operations and the numerous affiliates, he further builds its ethos. Throughout the write-up, King portrays himself as a virtuous and holy being through his vast bible quotes. â€Å"†¦just as the Apostle Paul left his little village of Tarsus and carried the gospel of Jesus Christ to practically every hamlet and city of the Greco-Roman world, I too am compelled to carry the gospel of freedom beyond my particular hometown.†(Rieder,2013). He also displays his wisdom while setting up his credibility by continually referring to great individuals in the face of history such as Socrates, Reinhold Niebuhr, Martin Buber among many others. He depicts a considerable knowledge of laws. He reiterates on the critical issue which is justice which is by consistently being delayed on the colored citizens. In his opinion, he cites justice as a God-given right, and it is being denied to him and his people. This illustration prompts him to quote other great leaders and philosophers such as Augustine Thomas Aquinas Paul Tillich. He justifies his opinion by the use of relevant court cases and situations in history. From this, the eight clergymen have a different viewpoint of understanding the Kings heated argument and from where it sprouts. Pathos Martin Luther King displays his prowess to capture the and engage his audience by involving them in the letter. He lets the readers imagine being in a similar situation like his. By doing this, he taps on their emotional switch and thus knows the information he relays onboard will not be taken lightly. Though used minimally, King lays pathos in a middle-placed paragraph. He probably uses the phrase, â€Å"if you have one shot at something, give it the best†. By putting the picture of a basic family structure (your mother, sister, your father, your brother, and sister) being subjected to mistreatment, rough handling and killing he makes the letter very emotional. .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1 , .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1 .postImageUrl , .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1 , .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1:hover , .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1:visited , .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1:active { border:0!important; } .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1:active , .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1 .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ua09ad9ad9b576f2a9694cebe0c840be1:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: What is art ? EssayKings second illustration is when he brings the issue of lacking definite response to your child when they inquire why they cannot visit a public amusement park which has been advertised on Tv. It is beyond reasonable doubt something ironic. He tries to show the bewildered look that a kid receives on the revelation that they could not do things done by other kids. The innocence of a young kid is being taken hostage as seen from the example. â€Å"Daddy, why do white people treat colored people so mean?†, this rhetorical question by a young kid as illustrated by King in his letter (King, 2018). This specific illustration indicates how segregation is slowly but steadily taking shape in young children. Logos Dr. Martin Luther, all through the letter uses logos to deepen his message.   He addresses the issue of justice, clearly outlining how they both mean. It is from his definition that he highlights that the segregation statutes are legal but unjust since they bring a sense of inferiority to the negros. He proceeds to mention a case of the clergymen commending the police for their well-done work in handling the demonstrators. King agrees that the police were right but then contrasts on why they were at good at work – handling peaceful demonstrators who were against the unjust segregation laws. Likewise, he uses a Hitler analogy on how he was doing legal things which were never just to the Jews. The readers will have a reflection of their action which might speed up change. King lays down his persuasive illustrations. Furthermore, he disproves the church’s position on the whole issue of segregation and further states his disappointment with the church. He argues that church leaders should lead in values and morals, whether lawful or not. He adds that church should act as a bridge between the society and the administration like seen in the past centuries when faith was so loud (Christians were God-intoxicated). His actions are also deemed as those of an extremist. He once again dives into his deep pool of wisdom by stating his content instead of dissatisfaction with being considered as an extremist. He compares himself with some extremists such as Jesus Thomas Jefferson. Amos John Bunyan Abraham Lincoln Was not Jesus an extremist in love? Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, pray for them that despitefully use you. (King, 2018). He puts across that being an extremist for good is morally right. He states his joy in being quoted as an extremist in civil justice in the future. As part of his summary, he requests for God’s forgiveness in any case of over-statement while making his claims. He also seeks forgiveness if in his letter there is an understatement of truth. Conclusion Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is a genius in linguistics from how he articulates his issues on the famous Letter from Birmingham jail. He makes use of ethos, pathos, and logos to speak his message to the leader. He outlines a point with the ethos and later uses pathos to support it. Once in a while, he engages the readers emotionally and mentally. The civil rights movement was also on the spotlight especially when he sought to inform the clergymen on the topic of justice and how it was being delayed (Rieder,2013). References Rieder, J. (2013). Gospel of freedom: Martin Luther King, Jr.s letter from Birmingham Jail and the struggle that changed a nation. King, M. L. (2018). Why we cant wait.
